| Out of over 110 bands officially confirmed so far for this year's Festival maybe 10 have anything to do with goth. The majority are: indie pop, electro, post-punk, EBM, etc. There is still some hope that bands from the traditional genres, such as neo-classical, will appear on the list later, but I would not bet any serious money on this. Maybe the name of the event should be modified to reflect this sea change? Thank heavens for the medieval contingent and, hopefully, some good neo-folk acts. |

Hm... since nobody has yet managed to define "Goth", you will be able to put *every* band in a "not goth" category, if you want to. And why "neo-classical" is "Goth", or "traditional", somewhat escapes me... _________________ *and when the party is over, we don't know who we are* |

And why Post-Punk (!) or EBM shouldn't be considered "traditional genres" of the Goth scene escapes me too ... but then again, I still would consider neoclassical stuff as a "traditional genre" here, since it all started with Dead Can Dance and In The Nursery, and if these two aren't some of the perennial faves of Goths the world over, who is? _________________ Ti ringrazio, Mondo, che imperturbabile sei, in che non giudichi le maschere della Mediocrità. Speaking of strictly - and somehow theoretical - musical style definitions you're right perhaps. But "Goth" isn't just that any more. It's the name of a whole culture rich with all kinds of phenomena including some very live and welcome new developments. Although I tend to use the expression "black scene" (which is somehow disturbing considering its double meaning both in english and german), to me "Goth" also signals the parenthesis: "Look where it all comes from and how well it thrives."
And, after 25, maybe 30 years of development, what do you think is a better proof of the vitality of a (sub) culture: New bands and new styles based upon the old wave/punk/goth music and yet looking for new sounds and expressions? Or some manneristic copies of the music played 20 years ago?
Going behind the question of personal taste (and I really don't enjoy everything new, just because it is new), I think, the name of the game is just another word, and meanings can change. The real challenge behind this is to retain and sometimes rediscover the old ways and, at the same time, live the vibrant new. _________________ Wer die Dunkelheit beleuchtet, um sie zu belehren, was sie sei, der zerstört sie.

Jawohl! Yet this makes the original post even more surprising, as the Post Punk styles of goth music are what I would have perceived as the decidedly British part of the goth scene. Believing the (pseudo-)intellectualism of neoclassic to be the epitome of goth is what I always thought to be a German misunderstanding of the term, caused by the popularity of the likewise (pseudo-)intellectual Neue Deutsche Todeskunst movement during the second uprising of the German goth scene. |

England VS Germany
FIGHT!
Honestly though, if only "Goth" bands were allowed to play, then who is to say you could even scare up 100 bands who would want or be able to play the show?
Then what about bands that -were- "goth" and then slightly shifted to other genres. Many still play old music at live shows.
I am an American and I know my opinion is probably looked down upon, but I always perceived Post Punk as one of the primary initiates of "goth".
But, like Cyberpagan said. You cannot define Goth. There are so many bands, even from the Batcave days that were different, Glam, Electronic, PostPunk that all could be considered Goth 1st wave. Much of Specimen's music if Glam, and much of Alien Sex Fiend's stuff has drum machines and other aspects of electronic music... but maybe they should never be allowed to play WGT because they just arn't Goff Enuff.
EMB and Industrial annoys me sure, but why should WGT be just about what one group thinks is good? _________________ "When did tech become goth?"

I would like to add a BIIIIIIIG "Sorry" for running the "When we were young" parties at WGT.
I know now, that they have nothing to do with Goth as they are pure Deathrock, Postpunk and oldschool Gothrock and should be banned from WGT... _________________ "Anglizismen sind out"

Couldn't agree more! If everyone liked the same genre of goth, just imagine how crowed the venues would be with us all trying to get in!
One of the things I love about WGT is that i can go with a group of friends who all have different tastes, can find bands to suit our interests during the day and meet up at night to compare experiences. |
